Make a meditation scroll including line and counterpoint for your own use. The instructor will review the history of the scroll in both Western and Eastern art and present a brief introduction to the use of the scroll for focused awareness and stillness in the creative process. Participants will learn to use the Japanese ink stick, ink stone, and brush as well as making the brush strokes that are used on the meditation scroll based on the Mokkotsu type of Sumi-e. Students will also make unusual inks by mixing small amounts of metallic and Pearl-ex powders in non-volatile binders such as gum Arabic, and use brightly colored gouache and watercolor as counterpoint to the black ink line. A workfolio designed by the teacher will be included for recording notes and thoughts. Scrolls also make great gifts! No experience in art or meditation required. Plus, making the scroll is lots of fun!
