Learn the history of foil stamping in this and get hands-on practice in this three-hour introductory workshop. The instructor will demonstration how to hot stamp brass type and ornaments onto leather, board, and paper. Student will also learn to bind simple pamphlet-stitch notebooks with foil stamped covers as a group. Resources for finding affordable and repurposed supplies to foil stamp on will be discussed, and students may bring their own scraps to foil stamp. This workshop will also troubleshoot what materials will work well and what won't work with this process. Feel inspired and expect to bring home printed greeting cards or another hand-stamped object! 

Not just for print and book artists, this is a great workshop for scrapbookers and crafters looking to expand their skills. Learn how this versatile machine is great for many artistic endeavors.

About the Instructor | Lara Durback

Lara Durback teaches letterpress classes that integrate the use of foraged materials at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She has worked as the Studio Director of the Book Art Studio at Mills College. She especially enjoys fixing Vandercooks. Lara taught a letterpress course at Naropa University's Summer Writing Program, and gave a talk on printing at SFMOMA's Shop Talk series. You can see her printing and/or writing work in Drift MagazineMrs. MaybeBombay Gin, the UK journal Hi Zero, and The Artist's Book Yearbook 2012-13Tripwire, and her archiving work at www.deepoakland.org. In 2013, with designer Andrew Kenower, she produced the letterpress publication Field WorkPoems on the Occasion of Mark diSuvero at Crissy Field for SFMOMA.
