Ever so handy and great for books that open or lay flat, the linkstitch and butterflly stitches are two that no book maker should be without. This daylong workshop begins with students creating their own bookcloth that they will use later in the day to cover their books. As the cloth dries, the instructor will lead students through making two different linkstitch bindings for small, soft-cover journals. In the afternoon students will also learn the butterfly stitch, which is sewn using narrow ribbons on multipage signatures. To wrap up the day, there be a discussion and demonstration of adding embellishments such as beads to these bindings. Each student will leave with their own small set of handmade journals.

Materials to Bring: Cover-weight paper, favorite fabric (to make book cloth out of), thin-width or narrow ribbon, beads to fit thread.

Optional and available at SFCB for student use during class: bone folder, utility knife, scissors, awl, pencil, linen thread, beeswax.
