In this one-day workshop students will learn to make paste papers and gain knowledge about their tradition in book arts. One of the oldest decorated papers used by bookbinders, a distinctive quality of paste paper is its 3-dimensional pattern and design. This is achieved when colored paste is applied to the paper and a pattern is made in the paste. As the paper dries, the paste leaves a slightly 3-D pattern on a 2-dimensional surface. In this course participants will learn to make paste and add pigments to acheive the desired color for the paper they are working on. The instructor will also demo a variety ways to make patterns, as well as the tools for pattern making; students will then be able to jump in and test these methods out for themselves. Paste papers can be used for 3-D bowls, folded books, book covers, book end sheets, collage, illustrations, and wrapping paper. Students will leave with at least 10-20 pieces of paste paper during this workshop.
