There’s a reason why this particular structure is called the “Secret Belgian Binding”: constructing this style of book may seem like a mystery at first, but is actually quite ingenious once you understand the basic ins-and-outs. Developed by Belgian bookbinder Anne Goy in the 1980’s, this is a wonderful structure for softcover sketchbooks as well as artist book editions. Students will construct 1-2 books in class, as time allows.

Materials to Bring: Bone folder; pencil; right angle triangle (small or medium size is o.k.); inexpensive small, flat bristle brush for gluing; a pair of full size, sharp scissors; bookbinder’s awl; any additional papers/ephemera that might be used as decoration for book covers (photos/collage elements/etc.); X-acto knife; materials or tools for mark-making such as rubber stamps, watercolor pencils, colored inks, ink pads, etc.

Workshop + Materials Fee: $175.00
