Protect delicate books or suites of prints in elegant and durable full-cloth covered clamshell presentation boxes. On Day 1, working from a provided template, students will be guided through the process of constructing custom clamshell boxes for books, suites of prints and other media. On Day 2, Students will themselves design and construct a box for a small book, suite of prints, or object of their choosing. Students will be invited but not required to bring their own materials to work with on their individual projects. All skills learned in Day 1 will now have to be applied by the student to their individual project including spec'ing and cutting boards, scaling & design.

Students enrolling in this class must have completed Box Making Core 1 :: Basic Structures

On Day 1: students will learn critical aspects of measuring & scaling, board cutting, tray construction, cover making, casing in, and options for labels and inlays. Also addressed will be various alterations and enhancements of the clam-shell structure.

On Day 2 students will readdress all skills covered on Day 1, but will have to apply those skills directly to a custom project of their own choosing. 


Materials to Bring: X-acto Knife, glue brush, bone folder, straight edge, scissors.

About the Instructor | Andrew Rottner

Andrew Rottner received a BFA from Wittenberg University in 2001 and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2007. He has studied and worked as a bookbinder and book artist in the Bay Area since 2004 and teaches at San Francisco Art Institute as well as SFCB. Andrew's books, paintings and drawings have been exhibited locally and internationally including at Photo L.A and the Codex Book Fair in Berkeley. Andrew's imprint, Super Classy Publishing, produces mass market and fine press books with Bay Area artists and printers.
