This course is an introduction to books made with leather. A small, refined full-leather casing will be made in goat skin over thin boards with blind tooling (a decorative technique). This binding, sometimes called a limp leather binding, is based on a historical binding often used for diaries or devotional texts. The second binding style is the millimeter binding, in which only a millimeter of leather shows at the spine and corners. Both of these books represent relatively modern styles of bookbinding, originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Materials to Bring: Peachey or other instructor-approved edge paring knife, metal ruler with metric and imperial increments (no cork), Olfa 9mm snap blade knife, bone folder(s), sharp scissors, awl or pin vise, medium glue brush (round, 1" in diameter), pencil and paper for taking notes, and dividers.
