This popular writing form has been the hand of type designers, artists, poets, and royalty for hundreds of years, and with a little effort, and a bottle of ink, it can be yours. In this class you will learn the basic letterforms, and the rhythm and spacing that give Italic its distinctive appearance. You will be provided with many historical and modern examples to inspire you, and the skills you learn working with a broad-edged pen will provide a firm foundation for learning almost any calligraphic hand. No prior calligraphy experience needed.


Materials to Bring: Pad of gridded paper.

About the Instructor | Judy Detrick

Judy Detrick taught calligraphy and graphic design at College of the Redwoods on the Mendocino coast for more than 30 years, and developed the Graphic Arts Certificate Program there. Active in the Bay Area calligraphy community, she teaches regularly at several Bay Area venues and throughout Northern California. She served as editor of Alphabet, the Journal of the Friends of Calligraphy 2007–2010. Her work is well represented  in the Harrison Calligraphy Collection in Special Collections at the San Francisco Public Library.
