San Francisco Center for the Book presents: A Hand Bookbinders of California Master Class Series | Knife Sharpening

Having the right tools in the proper condition is essential for every bookbinder. This two day course will cover the basics of knife sharpening for edge paring and lifting knives, as well as French points. We’ll talk about the advantages and disadvantages of Japanese water stones and micron sandpapers, and will explore using both those methods in the course.

Sharpening can see a bit scary for some folks, but it’s a necessary skill for binders and with a bit of practice can be done without any anguish or hesitation. With his expertise and guidance, Mark Andersson will help overcome sharpneing fears and students will leave this course with the confidence of knowing their can keep their tools in tip-top shape.

Materials to Bring: Edge Paring Knife of Swiss, English or French style (preferably Peachey; for guidance in buying an edge paring knife, please contact the instructor, waterstones (there are combo stones available if you don’t want to purchase a full set of stones), and some micron sandpapers.  Specifics will be provided upon registration.
