Before the rise of offset plate lithography in the mid 1950s, virtually all commercially produced images were printed on a letterpress. Photographs were etched into zinc or magnesium plates using halftone separations. As modern printing technologies have evolved, the process of preparing a photograph for print has remained largely unchanged.

Learn how to prepare photographs for letterpress printing using Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn how to separate files into multiple layer prints using three methods: Duotone, Process, and Posterization.

This class is a prerequisite for Letterpress Printing Photographs Part 2 :: Photographic Printing for Letterpress. In Part 2, students will print the photopolymer plates they created in Part 1. Press certification, either through SFCB's Core Certificate Program, or through approval by SFCB's Studio Manager, is required.
