The Surrealists permanently changed the way we see the world. They developed powerful and sustaining methods for the artist to connect to the deepest layers of the self and the psyche and to engage the viewer in these deep layers through the work of art. They pioneered radical visual and writing techniques for evoking powerful responses in the viewer. How did they do that? How can we do this in our own creative work? This class will present a brief history of Surrealism and discuss the principles and techniques of the Surrealist methods as a “way of working” of that can be applied to our own arts projects. Each participant will create a collage/assemblage using the principles and practices of Surrealism.

By the end of this class participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the historical context in which Dadaism and Surrealism emerged.
  2. Discuss the principal tenants of Surrealism as put forth both in the Manifestos and in the work of the artists/writers.
  3. Identify those individuals considered at the core of the movement.
  4. Discuss the role of Alchemy in the Surrealist Project
  5. Discuss one theory about “how Surrealism works” and ways you can apply the same method in your work.
