This 1 day intensive course focuses on showcasing the students’ visual collection of natural curiosities in a truly one of a kind enclosure structure. We will concentrate on presenting small treasures in this book/box combination structure. Works will include a unique hardcover book with frame and inset decorative panel. Using an assemblage of historic illustrations, found objects, altered book components and natural artifacts, students will explore boundless possibilities for adding found/handmande materials and written content.


Materials to Bring: 

  • Notebook and pen to take notes.
  • Scissors, xacto, 12” ruler, pencil, glue brush, bone folder
  • Found objects and natural materials 1” or less in thickness

About the Instructor | Rhiannon Alpers

Rhiannon Alpers, has an MFA in Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and a BA in Book Arts from UCSB. She has taught college courses at Academy of Art University, Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, Columbia College Chicago, Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. She has taught workshops Contemporary Jewish Musuem, Kala Printmaking Institute, Filoli Gardens Estate, Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, Paper Source stores in Chicago and San Francisco, and at her own studio in the Mission District. She is a papermaker, letterpress printer and book artist.
