In this 8 hour workshop learn Celtic Weave and Icicle stitches for decoratively binding signatures into hard board covers. These elaborate sewings will give your books unique and beautiful exposed bindings. Instructor will provide text pages but will teach folding, cutting, piercing of pages and creating and using a jig for binding patterns. Students will cover boards with favorite decorative papers or use boards provided by the instructor.


 

Materials to Bring: Basic bookbinding tools – needles, bone folder, ruler, scissors, knife

About the Instructor | Mary-Ellen Campbell

MARY-ELLEN CAMPBELL maintains a studio in rural New York. This is her second year as an Artist-in-Residence at the Mendocino Art Center. She was a Full Professor of Art at New Jersey City University, New Jersey, for 34 years. In addition to being a fine artist she has worked in graphic design and taught many courses in it at the university level. She has taught Book Arts workshops across the United States and abroad. Her education includes a BA in Art Education, St. John’s University, New York, an MA from Michigan State University, and an MFA from Pratt Institute, NY. As a multidisciplinary artist who does graphics, painting, sculpture, printmaking, book arts, and mixed media work, she has had 16 national/international solo exhibitions and over 80 group and invitational shows. In 2004-05 she was awarded the Fulbright Scholar Grant to teach Book Arts in Thailand. Her books are in many special collections across the country. Mary-Ellen won 11 residencies to do Book Arts since 2007 in Finland, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Costa Rica, Colorado, North Carolina, California and Minnesota creating more than 60 books.
