In this class, we’ll explore ways to bring a third dimension into our collage work. We will look at a history of 3-D collage in the 20thcentury with artists such as Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Fred Tomaselli. We’ll learn a variety of techniques to add more depth to our collages including dioramas and pop-ups, as well as creating layers with transparencies, and mixing other media with collage. Students will come away with at least two finished collages.


Materials to bring: Students are encouraged to bring their own paper, photographs or other items to use in their and their favorite cutting tool if they wish.

About the Instructor | Mark Faigenbaum

Mark Faigenbaum has degrees in Graphic Design and Psychology. He has been making fine art for the last 15 years. He does printmaking, assemblage and collage, and works with an emphasis on using vintage paper, books, and magazines. He has shown nationally and internationally and was twice artist in residence at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He completed a residency at Recology, more fondly known as the San Francisco City Dump, and his experience there made it clear to him that reuse of materials is not only inspiring it's essential.
