Hey you, finicky readers out there! Tired of having to wrestle with your beloved books as you read them? This class is for you. In this workshop, we will take a paperback book and transform it into something more durable and easier to flex and open. We will reuse the old covers and spines, creating a recessed area in the new covers to retain the book's original graphic feel. This is also one of the most common treatments for books in single sheets, so it is a technique you'll be able to use for other types of projects as well. Please note that we will be rebinding books provided by the instructor, so you can perfect the techniques before improving on your own personal treasures.

Skills Gained After Completing Course:

Using the guillotine

Using the board shear

Gluing

Rounding, backing, and lining spines

Proper measuring for a case

Casing in a textblock

Materials to bring:  Basic bookbinding tools: bone folder, awl, scissors, round glue brush, 9mm Olfa snapoff knife, ruler (no cork backing, should have metric as well as Imperial), pencil, dividers (helpful, but not necessary)

 About the Instructor | Juliayn Coleman 

Juliayn Coleman received a diploma in bookbinding and book conservation from the North Bennet Street School in Boston, Massachusetts in 2003. Her books have been shown at the Boston Architectural Center, Columbia College, and the Chicago Public Library. She is a member of the Guild of Book Workers (US) and Designer Bookbinders (UK). Recent clients include the Field Museum of Natural History, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Blackpoint Editions, and others. She currently resides in San Francisco, California.
