This beginning-level workshop is designed to familiarize the uninitiated with the world of letterpress by offering hands-on experience with the Cylinder Press and the Tabletop Platen Press.

Participants will learn the difference between the types of presses as well as the basics of setting type using SFCB’s vast collection of lead type and decorative ornaments.

About the Instructor | Lara Durback

Lara Durback works as Studio Director of Book Art at Mills College, where she completed an MFA in Poetry in 2007. She especially enjoys fixing Vandercooks. She teaches letterpress classes that integrate the use of foraged materials at the San Francisco Center for the Book. She also taught a letterpress course at Naropa University's Summer Writing Program, and gave a talk on printing at SFMOMA's Shop Talk series. You can see her printing and/or writing work in DriftMrs. MaybeBombay Gin, the UK journal Hi Zero, and The Artist's Book Yearbook 2012-13, and her archiving work on www.deepoakland.org. Evidence of her daily practice was exhibited in the ILSSA (Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts) exhibit Every Day Work Hammes Gallery, Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN, in 2012. In 2013, with designer Andrew Kenower, she produced the letterpress publication Field WorkPoems on the Occasion of Mark diSuvero at Crissy Field for SFMOMA.
