In the Japanese Stab Binding workshop participants will build a hinged hardcover Japanese-bound book and then build an enclosure to house it. The first portion of the workshop will cover creating a Japanese-style text block and binding of the hinged hardcover book in Japanese silk book cloths and papers. The second portion of the day will be devoted to learning how to create a Japanese-style box with bone enclosures. Instruction will be given on how to apply this technique to students’ own objects and books for future box-making endeavors.


Materials to Bring: Self-healing cutting mat, bone folder, ruler, X-ACTO® or other replaceable blade knife, scissors, pencil, large and small glue brushes, and container for glue.

About the Instructor | Rhiannon Alpers

Rhiannon Alpers, has an MFA in Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and a BA in Book Arts from UCSB. She has taught college courses at Academy of Art University, Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, Columbia College Chicago, Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. She has taught workshops Contemporary Jewish Musuem, Kala Printmaking Institute, Filoli Gardens Estate, Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, Paper Source stores in Chicago and San Francisco, and at her own studio in the Mission District. She is a papermaker, letterpress printer and book artist.
