Using sturdy hand-made paper as a sewing support, we'll create an exposed-spine sewing; a longstitch binding incorporating endbands. You will make a charming little book measuring 3.75" x 2.75" with colorful paper and threads, with thick watercolor paper interiors.

Skills Gained After Completing Course:

Students will learn how to use heavy-weight cover paper for a sewing support (making vertical and horizontal flaps, yap edges)

•Learn how to plan, calculate and implement sewing hole patterns

•Learn how to cut signatures to size from large sheets of paper, learning about grain direction in paper and how to orient for binding

•Learn a conservation longstitch binding that incorporates endbands onto the cover.


Materials to Bring: pencil, bone folder, scalpel or X-acto knife, scissors, dull kitchen knife or paper knife, triangle, pliers, tweezer, needle tool or awl, dividers, (calculator)

About the Instructor | Judy Serebrin

Judith’s books and sculptures have been exhibited widely and has been collected by libraries, museums and individuals in the United States and abroad. She has been making limited-edition and unique books from etchings, monotypes, watercolors and drawings since 1989. Her work has been featured in many books about Artist’s Books and contemporary ceramics. She has been teaching at the SFCB from the beginning.
