“Reduction Linocut” is a method of carving multiple layers of an illustration from a single linoleum block and using each successive carving to print a separate layer of color that is printed over the previous color layers. The process of creating a Reduction Linocut, in effect destroys the linoleum block, rendering the block incapable of being used for reprints. It’s a perfect method for producing true limited editions.

This class is comprised of: (1) a presentation of information regarding the types of images that are suitable for Reduction Linocut, (2) class participants learning and planning the progression of steps necessary to realize a Reduction Linocut beginning with the desired end result, then planning backwards, and then executing the plan forward in time; (3) and the hands-on opportunity to carve (and re-carve) a linoleum block and print from each successive carving on a Vandercook cylinder press.

Class participants will learn the steps necessary to take an illustration from concept through to completion using Reduction Linocut and will ultimately take home an edition of 10 small Reduction Linocut prints (printed in class).

About the Instructor | C.K Itamura

C.K.Itamura is a letterpress and reduction linocut printer, photographer and producer. Her work blurs the lines between mediums as she combines letterpress and reduction linocut printing with photography, social commentary, personal idealism, live presentation and mixed media. Preferring the term sensory artist or just plain artist, over visual artist, she strives to absorb sensory inputs and regurgitate them in analogous forms.
In 2013, she was selected by San Francisco Center for the Book as one of ten Featured Artists to create an industrial sized linocut for the 10th Anniversary Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival.
Her studio, Peach Farm Studio is based in Sonoma County. She teaches letterpress and reduction linocut classes and workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the North Bay.
