Each student in this class has several options, it is a choice for the experimental student! Would you prefer to construct a wearable, life sized kimono or a small kimono book with sewn binding?  Do you want to spend your day painting and printing the paper and make a simple construction, or beautifully construct a plain paper kimono? We should have time to complete one Kimono in your chosen style. 

After this class each student will have:

 1. Knowledge of authentic Kimono construction and materials.

 2. Practiced various painting techniques including brayer painting, stencils, and collage.

 3. Gained construction skills using paper to create a Kimono/book following traditional methods loosely.

 4. Constructd a simple sewn binding if they chose to make Kimono as book.


Materials to Bring: personal tools if preferred; scissors, straight edge, basics. You may want to bring any decorative paper scraps, printed papers, foils, ribbons, collage materials as you like. Paper for body pages if desired.

Workshop + Materials Fee: $150

 About the Instructor | Dennis Potter

Dennis Potter has an MA and MFA from UC Berkeley, and over 40 years experience as an artist and teacher in painting, printmaking, and fibers. He has shown his art nationally and has work in several public collections. Dennis has been working with paper casting, construction, sewing, dyeing, painting, and making Pilgrimage Kimonos for the past 12 years. He is happily obsessed with Asian papers.
