In this class, learn the steps necessary to repair ailing cloth-bound books.

Developed through decades of use in conservation labs and private studios alike, this style of repair allows the practitioner to safely disbind books with integrity and respect for the original structure; the style follows a conservation-oriented ethic of saving every part of the original material. The cloth reback process can be varied to attend to the many different problems books can have, but all variations are based on the foundational method taught. 

Workshop participants will work on books specifically chosen by the instructor, who will also discuss how to identify books that are not good candidates for this type of repair.

This workshop is open to students of all levels but some bookbinding experience would be helpful and having taken Beginning Bookbinding would be ideal.

Materials to bring: Basic bookbinding tools: bone folder, awl, 9mm Olfa snap-off knife, scissors, dividers, pencil. These supplies are all available for your use at SFCB but some students prefer to bring their own.
