Like all great artists, we’ll begin with the challenge of a blank page. We’ll discuss the history of collage and view examples of possibilities. With plenty of creative materials and a notebook with lots of blank pages, students will explore and practice the concepts of layering, paper tearing, using different adhering tools, color-ways and composition. Various other techniques will be introduced such as applique, stamping, pop-up extensions. We’ll also talk about the important joy of using “originals”, which can be difficult for some people. Participants will leave with the beginnings of a fabulous “sketch-book” of their collages.

All materials provided, including marbled paper, vintage French magazines, old photos, washi tape, maps, book pages and plenty of ephemera to get creative juices flowing.

About the Instructor | Molly Meng

Molly C. Meng studied literature with a personal minor in collecting other people’s lives.

An obsession with old notebooks, vintage photos, and every single discarded book that exists, her work reimagines untold stories behind the otherwise forgotten items of everyday.  A self-taught artist, the medium of collage in both paper and textiles is Molly’s dominant form of communicating.  She successfully weaves the elements of ephemera and storytelling into each piece she creates.  The spectacular beauty of the ordinary is elevated with detail in her work. Molly’s work has shown nationally in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles and she has produced large scale commissions for Prometheus Apartments in Northern California.  She teaches creative workshops around the U.S. as well as on annual trips to the South of France.  Molly C. Meng is currently living and working in Los Angeles.
