These albums, developed over 40 years by bookbinder Paul Delrue, are ingeniously designed and easy to make. The pages are made from folded colored card, and are hinged together with guards. The guards allow for the thickness of the photographs, and also do away with the need for sewing. Special preparation of the pages—which involves accurate measuring, scoring, and gluing—ensures that the finished album opens well and is neat and square. The album is rounded, but not backed (doing away with the need for a press), and the cover is made from board covered with handsome English buckram, which can then be enhanced with collage and decorative tooling. The book is very cleverly cased-in and requires only the lightest of weights to dry. And, best of all, like the sketchbook, it can be made with the simplest of hand tools and no specialist equipment. All levels.
