Are you longing to take your bookbinding to the next level? This one day, beginner level class on the exquisite longstitch will you teach you the ins and outs of a traditional German, non-adhesive, stitch pattern binding. Students will also learn to laminate decorative papers to create sturdy and malleable book covers. With the use of japanese hole punch to create the stitch patterning, the final product has a polished look, and it makes sewing easier in a unique and changeable pattern structure. We will also discuss the historical importance and prevalence of this binding. You’ll come away with a intricate and exquisite book, and the skills (and spine pattern) to make this binding at home.
Materials to Bring: Optional and available at SFCB for student use during workshop: bone folder, 12” metal ruler with the 0’ at the edge, small 3” metal triangle, ½” round brush for paste, mechanical pencil, snap blade or xacto knife, sharp scissors.

About the Instructor | Rhiannon Alpers
Rhiannon Alpers, has an MFA in Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and a BA in Book Arts from UCSB. She is a papermaker, letterpress printer and book artist. She has taught academic courses at San Francisco Art Institute, University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, Dominican University, Academy of Art University, Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, Columbia College Chicago, Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. She has taught workshops for Penland School of Crafts, Book Arts LA, San Diego Book Arts, Contemporary Jewish Museum, Kala Printmaking Institute, Center for Book and Paper in Chicago, and at her own studio in the Mission District.
