In this class, students will learn about the history of Woodcut Printmaking, with roots in Japan and Europe, and about the contemporary version of this art form that has had a resurgence in recent years. The instructor will teach the interworking of transferring the image to the wood. From there, different carving techniques will be demonstrated so everyone can carve their images into wood. The workshop will wrap up with students printing their woodcuts, thus creating an edition of paper prints.

The first class meeting will be focused on creating imagery. The second class meeting will include preparation for the printing stage where an edition of print will be created from the carved blocks. Print trades between students is strongly encouraged!

Materials to Bring: Images to be used for the woodcut; pencils, pens, sharpie pens; paper for printing (2 sheets will be provided per student); carving tools (the instrucor suggests Power Grip tools - available through Hida Tools in Berkeley - buy 1 “v-gouge” and one “u gouge” roughly $12 total).

About the Instructor | Kate Dedlow

Art making began when Kate was a child. She is continually exploring, fascinated by nature and the many manifestations of beauty, strength, and power that nature has the power to show us. Her studio practice is fueled by the fascination with the natural landscape as a means in which to communicate and articulate ideas of wild, raw, organic, mystic, spiritual, sacred.
Kate has shown in galleries and museums nationally, and internationally in group shows with other artists, art collectives, and independently. She graduated with a BFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 2012 and has since managed and worked with several print shops and art organizations such as Drive By Press (Nashville, TN), Hanger 18 (Oakland, CA), Non-Grata (Estonia), Self Help Graphics (LA, CA), SFCB (SF,CA), Art Students League of Denver, as well as touring colleges with Drive By Press sharing the love of printmaking and conducting workshops and artist lectures.
Kate is a teacher and artist living in Berkeley, CA.
