In this one and a half-day workshop, students will learn various methods of surface decoration using Korean techniques and materials. Using hanji (Korean paper), students will create a collection of samples including backed, waxed, burnished, and felted papers that can be used as book covers. On the first day, students will learn the traditional method of backing paper to make book covers. This includes a demonstration of how to prepare wheat paste for backing paper. Students will also experiment with joomchi, a Korean felting technique using colored hanji. The following day after the paper has dried, students will learn various burnishing techniques over surfaces such as a traditional carved woodblock, carved linoleum, and polymer plate. Students will leave the class with a handy portfolio of hanji samples that can be used for future projects. All basic materials will be provided, but students will have the option of purchasing additional hanji for future projects. No previous binding experience required.
