In this workshop, the instructor will guide students through mixing colors with acrylic paint using a minimal palette to gain a basic understanding of color theory. Students will also get to experiment with acrylic mediums to achieve certain visual effects. The first half of class will focus on color theory, while the rest will center on paint application techniques using various acrylic media. The skills covered are great for altering surfaces inside and outside of books. Students will gain the groundwork and understanding to further develop their painting skills beyond this course and leave with their own handmade samples to reference in the future. 

Materials to Bring: 3 Primary color acrylic paints: Cadmium red medium, Cadmium yellow medium, Cobalt blue (“Hues” are acceptable. Recommended brand: Golden or Liquitex artist grade); 2-3 Acrylic paint brushes (synthetic white nylon, round and flat, ranging in size from small to large); palette knife/spatula; rags for paint brushes.

Optional: apron, gloves.

About the Instructor | Rea Lynn de Guzman

Rea (pron. ray-uh) de Guzman is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, print media, and sculpture. Originally from Manila, Philippines, she immigrated to the United States as a teenager. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited her work in Chicago, the Bay Area, and internationally in India. Her sculpture After Maria Clara's Piña Fiber Sleeve was featured at Emergent Art Space and ARTslant, where it was awarded ARTslant’s 6th 2014 Showcase Juried Winner in the mixed-media category.
She is currently a studio artist and instructor at Root Division. She lives and works in San Francisco.
