Using natural dyes we will introduce INDIGO as a dye and using special photo sensitive dyes work with acetate images and real objects to create a variety of blues!  Making books with dyes, we will explore simple book structures as well as a huge variety of ways to use local dyes to print, stamp, stencil, paint and make marks on our papers and natural materials


Materials to Bring: 8 x 10 ACETATE copies of imagery in black & white (CONTRAST is important for this photo process), Ruler, bone folder, scissors, natural materials you are drawn to  (leaves, branches, bark, flowers, bones, shells, beads, feathers, leather, seed pods,  etc.), scrap fabric, collage materials, rubber stamp images or alphabets, Collage papers, metal scraps, corrugated cardboard, glue stick and / or PVA, camera, notebook / sketchbook, , latex or plastic gloves, apron, thread & needles you like to use, awl if you have one…

About the Instructor | Mark Wangberg

Mark has explored Natural Materials and Dyes in the Amazon and in California and leads trips to the Amazon with his wife Connie Grauds, who has been working in the Amazon for over 21 years.

Mark Wangberg has a lifelong passion for Book Arts, including his long experience in working with acclaimed book artist Hedi Kyle.

Mark has been making artist books for more than 40 years. He holds an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Artsin Philadelphia. He has taught book arts workshops across the U.S. and his work was included in Lark’s 500 Handmade Books. He founded Jack-In-The-Box Press in 1972.  He is also a published poet. 

His work has been exhibited nationally, internationally and at 23 Sandy Gallery, Water Gallery, MarinMOCA, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a solo show at RiskPress Gallery in Sebastol.  Recently he has been involved in presenting book, paste paper and marbling workshops for indigenous people in Africa and the Amazon.  

Mark has taught thousands of children and adults how to make books and teaches book arts (simple to complex binding, paste papers & marbling, etc.) as well as portfolio prep for college bound students. He also specializes in classes for teachers who want to make books in their classrooms!  Mark lives in San Rafael and Peru and teaches in the San Francisco area and the Amazon.
