Coptic Bookbinding Workshops with Judith Serebrin

Last year I took a couple fantastic binding workshops at the Center for the Book with Judith Serebrin! Check out what I made. I took double-needle coptic binding, and the watercolor sketchbook with magnetic closure. More images of these books are on my blog, here and here.

Unscannable Books by Jasmine Raznahan

A truly excellent post follows on one artist’s response to e-books, the future of print, and making work. A gem. Guild of Book Workers

Some of my favorite works from the Guild of Book Workers. Above, a swirly book by Adam Watson. The archetype of Adam Watson’s ‘Skwirly’ books, the little dodecapod looks poised to scuttle off back to sea…. A blank book, bound in handdyed, contorted cow hide with calf spine. 30 x 27 x 27 centimeters. Created […]

Old-Fashioned Bookbinding

The Memory of The Netherlands site has digitised a representative sampling of one thousand book bindings from the holdings of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (Royal National Library of The Netherlands). The collection includes luxurious hand-made binding examples from over 800 years up to the 21st century. Discovered via Bibliodyssey.

Susan Stockwell’s Sculptural Explorations

These dresses made of paper maps and money are a part of Susan Stockwell’s sculptural exploration of colonialism and the British empire. From her website: Susan Stockwell’s work … is concerned with issues of ecology, geo-politics, mapping, trade and global commerce. The materials used are the everyday, domestic and industrial disposable products that pervade our […]

The Book of the Future

I giggled at this comic from the New York Times, “the book of the future,” by Grant Snider. I do hope that both analog and digital books have a place in the future of the book. Check out the digital vs analog media tag for more work exploring the future of the book form in […]

Pop-up Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral

That sound you just heard was me squealing with delight. This is SO AMAZING. Paper artist Sheung Yee Shing created this amazing pop-up of Notre Dame Cathedral, complete with apse and flying buttresses. I’ve watched the video above repeatedly on a loop since I discovered it. It looks like a modified chessboard pop-up structure filled […]

Peter Gentenaar: Paper Sculpture

More than 100 of Peter Gentenaar’s ethereal paper sculptures were installed inside the Abbey church of Saint-Riquier in France. Gothic architecture + paper art = SWOON! I love how the curves and organic forms of the paper sculptures echo the beautiful vaulting and cluster piers of the church interior – look how the sculptures have […]
