The Sketchbook Project II

Summer in San Francisco is freezing, and Sunday was no exception. That didn’t stop a hardcore group of book-lovers, artists, imagination-lovers, readers, and what have you (including myself) from gathering in the SFCB parking lot to get a look at the Sketchbook Project’s mobile library. Well, more specifically, at the 1,000 or so books that […]

The Book of You

The author Carlos Ruiz Zafón once said, “Every book has a soul, the soul of the person who wrote it and the soul of those who read it an dream about it.” In some books, we can only glimpse this soul tangentially… in the way a few words are organized on the page, or in […]

Coptic Bookbinding Workshops with Judith Serebrin

Last year I took a couple fantastic binding workshops at the Center for the Book with Judith Serebrin! Check out what I made. I took double-needle coptic binding, and the watercolor sketchbook with magnetic closure. More images of these books are on my blog, here and here.

Unscannable Books by Jasmine Raznahan

A truly excellent post follows on one artist’s response to e-books, the future of print, and making work. A gem. Enjoy! -Rocket Jasmine Raznahan has created a small collection of unscannable books, “A structural exploration into book forms, created as a response to the destructive method of book scanning advocated by Google Books.” Much to […]

Guild of Book Workers

Some of my favorite works from the Guild of Book Workers. Above, a swirly book by Adam Watson. The archetype of Adam Watson’s ‘Skwirly’ books, the little dodecapod looks poised to scuttle off back to sea…. A blank book, bound in handdyed, contorted cow hide with calf spine. 30 x 27 x 27 centimeters. Created […]

The collection includes luxurious hand-made binding examples from over 800 years up to the 21st century. Discovered via Bibliodyssey.

Book and Paper Arts Inspired by Tea

It’s a common fallacy to assume that other people are just like us. But surely it’s not a fallacy to assume that people who like books and bookmaking and ephemera also like tea, right? I certainly do! (More on that below.) Here’s some book and paper arts incorporating an affection for tea, demonstrating that other […]
