Internships
INTERNSHIPS AT THE SAN FRANCISCO CENTER FOR THE BOOK
San Francisco Center for the Book internships are currently unpaid and semester long commitments for academic students seeking units for their program or degree. Interns generally work one day a week and additionally assist with events and publicity for SFCB.
The current open internships are in the areas of Letterpress Production/Studio Maintenance. We are currently accepting applications for Summer - Fall 2013 for college credit or experience. See below for each internships requirements and job duties.
For questions about the information below about the specific job descriptions of our upcoming internships or to apply, please contact info@sfcb.org. In your email please include your academic program of study (degree program, city and university), semester dates you would be applying for and contact information for us to reach you. Interviews are by appointment only with selected candidates. Each position's application deadline is listed, generally following schedules of Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. Please note that SFCB cannot provide interns with visas, housing or transportation costs at this time. Students can receive academic credit for their internship and should provide information about requirements of their program with the application (hours required and information about paperwork needed for credit)
LETTERPRESS INTERNSHIP
Spring/Summer 2013
The letterpress internship is a wonderful opportunity for qualified candidates to gain experience with "real world" challenges printing internal jobs for SFCB. The semester long (4 months or up to 6 months) internship of one full day per week provides candidates with job experience that will enable them to work at letterpress production jobs in the field or to move onto freelance work of their own. Projects during the internship vary from 1 to 3 color registration jobs, event promotional materials, limited edition fine printed books, letterhead sets, custom pieces for donor gifts, and a variety of other interesting pieces. Supervised by the Studio Manager, interns will receive guidance on executing jobs they are not familiar with and freedom to plan and produce the job on their own when ready. Interns also help maintain the studio facilities as a portion of their weekly time, cleaning and organizing the studio for general upkeep and community usage for rentals and workshops.
The minimum requirement is Letterpress Level 3, also called Letterpress Core Curriculum, or testing to achieve equivalent from students' respective programs of study. Students can take a written and verbal exam to show qualifications, with samples of their previous work from an academic institution or personal experience.
Candidates should be detail oriented, patient, and work well with other interns and volunteers in a team setting. Polymer platemaking, color mixing, basic mathematics skills, and paper cutting on a paper guillotine are also helpful but not required.
Please submit a completed application with a statement about why you are interested in being an intern at SFCB (1-5 paragraphs) and 2 references (teachers or previous employers) to info@sfcb.org for review. The application can be downloaded here.

GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERNSHIP
The design internship is an excellent opportunity for qualified candidates to gain experience with "real world" challenges designing internal jobs for SFCB. The semester long (4 months or up to 6 months) internship of one full day per week provides candidates with job experience in designing event promotion printed and web material, internal forms, catalogs and exhibition materials.
Qualified candidates should be able to use design programs such as Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop with confidence and ease. It is requested that all candidates submit a sample of portfolio design pieces (such as a personal web address, PDF or Jpeg files), and 2 references (teachers or previous employers). Interns must be able to execute and update existing design files as well as format banners and images for use on the website. Interns are also encouraged to be highly detail oriented, have experience in working with files for letterpress or willing to learn, and work well with staff members and other interns as a team for revising and executing projects. It is helpful but not required if interns have a laptop computer to work on while at SFCB and have a working knowledge of CS5, Mac operating systems and file usage.
Submission dates: Please note Internships are first come first serve for each session.
Please inquire with marketing@sfcb.org for dates of submission and approval.
